Keralam : Land of Ayurveda

Keralam : Land of Ayurveda

Keralam did not just preserve Ayurveda - it perfected it.

Along India’s southwestern coast, in the shadow of the Western Ghats — one of the world’s great biodiversity hotspots — classical Ayurvedic knowledge merged with the forest wisdom of Kerala’s indigenous communities. The result was an entirely distinct school of healing, carried forward for fifteen centuries, in an unroken lineage, by eight hereditary physician families known as the Ashtavaidyar.

What deepened this further was the land’s own rythm. The monsoon which first arrives in Kerala before the rest of the country, creates a unique annual window of healing that practitioners have harnessed for centuries.

In most of the country, Ayurveda is sought out. In Kerala, it is simply lived. It is woven into diet, daily routine and household rituals across every community, generation after generation.

THIS SAME WISDOM WAS NEVER RESERVED FOR HUMANS ALONE.

Most people know Ayurveda as a system of human healing. Few know that it always contained, within its classical structure, two other branches - Mrigayurveda, devoted entirely to animals, and Vrikshayurveda, devoted to plant life.

Within Mrigayurveda, is an entire branch of medicine devoted to the health of elephants called Gajayurveda.

In Kerala this wasn't academic. Elephants held central roles in temple and royal life, and dedicated practitioners called Gajavaidyars developed a living tradition of Ayurvedic animal care that was passed down through generations. Even today, temple elephants receive seasonal Ayurvedic care during the monsoon month of Karkidakam, the same window used for people.

Wellness here was never a human privilege. It was always a principle. And it is where your pet’s care begins.
