How kerala ayurveda is different from himalayan based ayurveda

Different foundational texts, different clinical priorities.

North Indian practice draws primarily from the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. Kerala's tradition is anchored in the Ashtangahridayam by Vagbhata - a text so central to Kerala's hereditary physician families that it shaped not just their prescriptions but their entire diagnostic philosophy. Each text carries its own clinical emphasis, and the traditions that grew around them reflect those differences in practice.

Plants and oils in Kerala; metals and minerals in the north.

North Indian Ayurveda integrated the Rasashastra tradition extensively - processing heavy metals and minerals into therapeutic preparations, a school that developed significantly from the 8th century AD onward. Kerala, shaped by its forest wealth and its primary text, remained overwhelmingly plant and oil-based. This difference is not merely historical - it actively defines treatment today.

The body treated from the outside in. While internal cleansing methods like therapeutic emesis and purgation carry greater weight in North Indian practice, Kerala developed an entire universe of external oil therapies. Treatments like Shirodhara, Pizhichil, Navarakizhi, and Elakizhi are unique to Kerala - they appear in no classical Samhita and emerged from centuries of clinical refinement specific to this region.

A different base oil - and a different therapeutic logic. Classical texts prescribe sesame oil as the primary medium. Kerala, with its abundance of coconut and a humid tropical climate, developed a vast parallel pharmacopoeia of coconut oil-based medicated preparations, refined over millennia. Many carry the suffix Keratailam to denote their origin and are found nowhere else in the Ayurvedic tradition.

Local plants, locally understood - for thousands of years.

Where certain plants specified in classical texts were rare in Kerala, practitioners identified local herbs with equivalent or superior properties - not as modern substitutions, but through thousands of years of continuous clinical use. This depth of botanical understanding, passed within families across generations, has no equivalent elsewhere.
